The world we inhabit is a vibrantly beautiful place.  And the art we create should be a joyous exploration of the richness that surrounds us. Each aspect of every journal I make is carefully curated- from the repurposed leather that allows me to choose the exact design of the exterior to the splash of color of the end pages- meant to delight and surprise the eye when opening each book. No detail is overlooked during my creative process- whether it’s a subtly sewn binding or adornment with delicate beads and found objects. After completion, each book is named- a reflection of its identity.

I love journals as a medium since I know the artistic process doesn’t end with me- instead each piece is an invitation to its new owner to explore, to create.

Each journal is hand-sewn with love and intended for use with your daily adventures- great or small, near or far, wherever they make take you.

Sarah Benesh started Bound to Write to combine her passion for paper, writing and art.

In her studio, perched above her lovingly restored 1856 limestone farm house in rural Iowa, Sarah revels in the the rich textures and colors of the leather and paper she crafts into truly unique and always one of a kind books that are ready for your next inspiration.

Sarah Benesh graduated with her art degree from Cornell College in ’89 before pursuing her masters in occupational therapy and starting her family. She has since returned to her artistic roots with a primarily self-taught exploration of hand bound leather journal creation. Sarah currently lives in rural Mount Vernon, Iowa with her husband and children, 12,000 bees tucked into 2 hives, 11 chickens, 6 ducks (including one that thinks he’s a chicken), 2 cats, and the singular Winnie the guinea pig.
